Archbishop Desmond Tutu Hospitalized








Renowned elder statesman and first black Archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will remain in hospital for observation today after undergoing an intensive course of antibiotics.

Archbishop Tutu was admitted to an undisclosed private hospital in Cape town almost some seven days ago after an oral treatment for a persistent infection failed.

The 83-year-old will remain under medical observation despite no longer receiving intravenous treatment.

In a statement released by the Desmond and Leah Foundation states, Archbishop Tutu is in high spirits and is responding well to treatment.

The Sydney Peace Prize laureates was hospitalised for a suborn infection almost a week ago.

ArchBishop Tutu's plans to travel for the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates summit in Rome in December was cancelled due to health issues.

His family has said it’s not clear when he will be discharged from hospital.



On Thursday today, South African President Jacob Zuma joined other South Africans in wishing Tutu a speedy recovery.

Zuma told South Africans to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.

Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba also offered words of support.

In a statement offered, Makgoba joined many well-wishers, saying he hoped Tutu would be able to go home to his family soon.

On Wednesday, Rivonia trialist Ahmed Kathrada said he was optimistic Tutu would make a speedy recovery.

Kathrada also sent his well wishes to the 83-year-old.

“We wish and pray that he will recover as soon as possible.”

Tutu previously underwent treatment for a persistent infection two years ago.

He has been living with prostate cancer for the past 15 years.
